Portrait SIG

The Portrait Group is for members who want to explore their interest in portraiture, mostly posed, capturing personality, mood or emotion.  We take a broad view of what counts as portraiture.  So, we include sporting, events, theatre and performance, and candid or street photography, and pet portraiture.

Starting in January 2022 the group undertakes a variety of practical group activities as well as holding regular six-weekly Zoom meetings to review images, and to plan and review activities.

Here are some of the activities we have organised:

  • Photo sessions with people including models, using studio or natural lights, indoors or out

  • We are currently exploring photographing in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites and have conducted one shoot inside and out at the local arts centre.

  • Sport – polo, rugby, kayaking, tug-of-war.

  • Environmental portraiture – essentially people doing things! For instance, woodworking or blacksmithing
  • Theatre dress rehearsals
  • Musical performances
  • WW2 re-enactments

We have produced themed sets of images for use in external club competitions including the winning panel in the Guildford Photography Society’s Albany Cup.
