Tug of War – Sandhurst
Hours of fun
In early June, two members of the Group, Richard Bullock and I, had a couple of hours of fun at a Tug of War competition in Sandhurst. Whilst we all have an inkling of what it’s about it was interesting to see the serious side of this sport. There were about eight teams competing, each with a team of eight, some men, some women and some mixed. Matches took about ten minutes, some were best of three and there was a barely a gap between matches. It was all organised with military precision, not altogether surprising given that the army seem to be involved! Sandhurst is an important club and were world champions some years ago.
In the thick of it
Richard and I were able to blag our way into the thick of the action and were able to ply our trade with mixed success. It was a bright sunny day so photographing the action was difficult, with strong shadows being an issue. It’s always interesting photographing something new and we have a few photos to share with you.

Stephanie Paterson comments:
My husband was a National Youth Champion and inter-services Army Champion in Tug of War. My brother in law is a member of Sandhurst team and was in the pulling team when they became World Champions. It has a very serious side to it – and a lot of history behind it too!
