Scapers are Back!
Scapers walk, Thursday 13th June, at Aston, a little village near Henley-on-Thames. A perfect walk for photographers as it includes beautiful landscapes and wildlife.
Our meeting point the Flower Pot Inn is reached by a steep narrow hill on the outskirts of Henley, I was glad Nikos was driving!
Culden Faw Estate
Nikos Polydorou, (our leader), Alan Edwards, Gareth Fish, Helen Berridge and I walked through the private Culden Faw Estate (we are allowed).
3,500 acres of mature beech woods, rolling pastures, parkland, beautiful chalk valleys and a few quirky sculptures. There were gorgeous banks of wild flowers such as ox-eye daisies, foxgloves and common sainfoin.
The Estate is the amalgamation of Culham and Hambleden Estates and Henley Park, Fawley; its history is recorded in the Doomsday Book.
Deer Park
The deer park is home to three varieties, including white fallow deer plus soaring red kites, you can see skylarks on a good day.
Culham Chapel
The Chapel of Christ the Redeemer dominates the landscape on top of a hill overlooking the Thames in the deer park. Designed by the architect Craig Hamilton, the chapel was consecrated by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor in December 2015.
River Thames
The return journey back to the pub was along the River Thames, past the Henley rowing course, Temple Island and Hambleden lock and weir.
Lunch at The Flowerpot Inn was stupendous, particularly the gammon double egg and chips which was enjoyed by Nikos and Gareth!
Another walk is planned for18 July, look out for details on the Parish Notes and Facebook.
